DeForest Douglas Diver railroad photographs, ca. 1870-1950.

Original photographs, negatives, and glossy prints, mainly of the New York, Ontario, and Western Railway; subjects include employee groups, locomotives, passenger and freight cars, stations, roundhouse and yards, flooded and snowbound tracks, construction work and heavy equipment, the Hawk Mountain tunnel, and various wrecks. Photographs were taken by Mr. Diver and others in Delaware, Madison, Oneida, Oswego, Otsego, and Sullivan Counties, New York. Also negatives of photographs of family, friends, and local scenes in and around Walton, N.Y.

The New York, Ontario and Western Railway Company was organized in the late 19th century; its purpose was to provide railroad service in New York State between Lake Ontario and the Adirondack Mountains. By the 1950's, recession and modernization costs drove the company into serious debt. On October 10, 1957, the Interstate Commerce Commission reported the approval of the abandonment of the rail-line and thus closed the terminal facilities at Oswego, New York.
